Saffron Walden
Town Band

Welcome to the Saffron Walden Town Band!

Saffron Walden Town Band is a community-based ensemble of woodwind, brass and percussion players. We currently have around 30 members who meet each week to rehearse in a relaxed and friendly environment. The band enables musicians of all ages and abilities to come together to make music, have fun and share musical knowledge and enthusiasm with others.

COME AND JOIN US!

We always welcome new members. If you play a woodwind, brass or percussion instrument, we’d love to hear from you! We have members who are just starting to learn all the way through to members who are grade 8 and beyond. We rehearse every Wednesday just outside Saffron Walden. A friendly and relaxed atmosphere, focused on enjoying and experiencing music together. Do get in touch via our Contact page.

Simon Mariner-Goff
Musical Director

Simon has been playing in wind ensembles for over 10 years, ending up as principal clarinettist of the Lincolnshire Youth Wind Orchestra during his time at school. This is also where he first started conducting, going on to conduct the University of Cambridge Concert Band between 2013 and 2017. He has been Musical Director of the Saffron Walden Town Band since October 2019, after happily spotting their ad in the local newspaper. He hasn't looked back since...

Steph Thake
Chair
Steph joined Saffron Walden Town Band in September 1987 having recently moved to the town. She started learning to play the trumpet at the age of 12, playing with the school band and the Hertfordshire County Wind Band. After leaving school Steph played with a variety of mainly brass bands, including a short spell with Atlas CopCo in Hemel Hempstead. However her heart lay with the structure of the wind band. Steph joined the committee as Treasurer in 1988. By 1990 the band had a surplus of trumpet players and she moved sections to play the Euphonium.
As the band increased in size the committee organised several European tours. As Steph’s family grew up they too joined the band making it a family affair. After playing the Euphonium for 25 years, Steph returned to the trumpet to support a greatly reduced section of the band. In 2015 she handed over the treasurers role and was subsequently elected as the chair, where she has continued to support, encourage and build the band.
